Sitka Salmon Shares offers Tasty Wild Alaskan Seafood

So, what is Sitka Salmon Shares?

Sitka Salmon Shares began in 2011 when a Midwestern college professor and two of his students traveled to Sitka, Alaska. Together, they began to learn about Southeast Alaska’s wild salmon population and the importance of protecting one of the world’s largest reserves.

After returning to the Midwest with boxes of line-caught wild Alaskan Salmon, harvested back in Sitka, their peers were amazed by the fish. Not only were they impressed by the taste, but the traceability increased knowledge in understanding the importance of the special region.

Today, Sitka Salmon Shares is enabling fisherman to do what they love, while providing boat-to-doorstep deliveries of fish all across the country. Together, we can all aid in the efforts of rebuilding America’s seafood system — from the ocean up!

8 Reasons to Join Sitka Salmon Shares

  1. The fish are wild-caught. You’re getting fresh, healthy food for your families — minus antibiotics and dyes!
  2. Community-Based. The fishermen are local (to Sitka, AK) and providing a way of life for their families. They’re not your far-from-home, commercial fishermen. They’re just like you and me!
  3. Fine Quality. Tasty Wild Alaskan Salmon deserves to be treated with high standards. The fishermen commit to operating using the highest standards by operating on short trips, bleeding, icing, and special handling. Once on shore, your fish are flash-frozen at the peak of freshness!
  4. Small-Family Minded. By purchasing your fish directly from Sitka Salmon Shares, you’re letting small families keep up to 30% more of the value of their harvest in their pockets. Many are also owners of the company.
  5. Transparency. With each delivery, you get more than fish — you get a story behind those who actually catch your order!
  6. A Company with a Conscious! Carbon emissions are offset by the Alaska-to-Midwest distribution and 1% of the revenue is donated back to wild fish conservation.
  7. Easy & Tasty! By purchasing, you easily reserve your share of the harvest and have tasty fish delivered right to your door. The website provides recipes, cooking tips, and more to get the most out of your purchase.
  8. Sustainable. Catch limits have been established to preserve the viability of wild fish populations. The fishermen strictly follow these to continue catching the best that Alaska has to offer.

Lemon Butter Herb Cod

Sitka Salmon Shares - Black Cod

Inside of my sample box, I received two large fillets of Wild Alaskan Black Cod. This fish is known for rich, intense flavor and buttery texture. It’s also abundant in omega-3 oils!

Cod Ingredients

When we have white fish for dinner, my boys frequently ask for lemon-base seasonings and drizzles. For this Lemon Butter Herb recipe, you will need the following:

  • Seasoned Cast Iron Skillet – Not completely necessary, but it’s my favorite cookware!
  • Basting Brush – I love the silicone brushes! They’re easy to use and clean up!
  • 1 to 2 lbs. of Black Cod
  • ¼ cup of Olive Oil – If you prefer, you can use Canola or Vegetable.
  • 5 Garlic Cloves – Fresh is always my go-to, but minced works.
  • ¼ cup Fresh Parsley leaves or 4 tsp. dry leaves
  • 5 tbsp. Lemon Juice – By using a large, fresh lemon, I can juice one half for the recipe and slice the other half for garnish.
  • 2 tbsp. Melted Butter
  • ¼ cup Flour
  • ½ tsp. Ground Coriander
  • 1 tsp. Smoked Paprika
  • ½ tsp. Ground Cumin
  • ½ tsp. Salt
  • ¼ tsp. Black Pepper

Preheat your oven to 400°F. Add 1 tbsp. of oil to your cast iron pan and allow to warm on medium heat. Melt your butter and mix with minced garlic cloves, 5 tbsp. lemon juice, and 2 tbsp. of oil. Set aside.

Whisk your flour, coriander, paprika, cumin, salt, and pepper together in a separate bowl.

Cod Cooking in Cast Iron

Pat your fish dry. Dip in the lemon-butter mixture and then the flour. Shake off excess and place in pan. Sear the fish for approximately two minutes per side. When you flip to the brown the second side, drizzle fish with your remaining lemon butter mixture.

Cod Cooking in Cast Iron Adding Lemon Mix

Remove from heat and place entire cast iron pan in the oven. Bake until your fish easily flakes (approximately 10 minutes). Remove from the oven and season with parsley! Serve with your favorite rice or my Roasted Broccoli Salad!
